Wireless Growth
Anyone who has watched the telecomm industry over the last handful of years understands the major shifts that have occurred with landline providers watching their base erode coupled with the growth of wireless. To emphasize that point we examined the revenue growth of 10 wireless providers in the Global 5000 database.
These are not the big names but international firms and smaller (and dare we say more nimble) players such as:
Vimpel Communications of Russia
MetroPCS
NII Holdings
Leap Wireless
RCN
Turkcell
Taken as a group, their 2007 revenue showed a 33.8% growth rate. This was on top of 27.5% the year before.
To be sure, they are smaller than the traditional phone giants who also have wireless services. But these folks are growing fast and generally working without legacy (baggage?) systems and processes. And there are probably too many of them and consolidation will likely occur over time. Nonetheless — good to keep an eye on this segment of the overall market.
