The Billion $ Companies

We have noticed that people get confused between various lists like the Fortune 1000 or Forbes list or Global lists and companies with $1billion or more. Keeping track of all this isn’t easy because definitions change and the market is constantly moving.

Here’s a couple of guidelines and one of the market moving elements.

The Fortune 1000 is a rank order (by revenue) of US public companies. Wal-Mart was #1 with $351 million. The last one on the list was NCI Building with $1.57 billion.

The Global 500 is the largest 500 public companies around the world. Wal-Mart was also #1 on that list. Bombardier was #500 on that list with $14.8 billion.

The Forbes list is the largest private companies in the US with $1 billion or more of revenue. Koch Industries was #1 on that list with $90 billion. There are 424 companies on that list.

That’s a lot of different combinations… and even with that, the Global 5000 company database has another 765 companies not on any of those lists but have more than $1 billion of revenue.

And now to the moving target challenge. In 2007, another 59 grew into the $1 billion range. We also have 38 companies that had $1 billion or more in 2006 revenue that have been acquired. These are listed below.
